The second concert of Etobicoke Centennial Choir’s 2019-2020 season offers exquisitely beautiful and moving choral music reflecting on the eternal mysteries of life and death. Luigi Cherubini’s powerfully expressive Requiem Mass in C Minor forms the centerpiece of this musical offering. While seldom performed today, it was a great success when first written and was held in the highest esteem by the greatest composers of his time. Beethoven called Cherubini “the greatest living composer,” and this requiem was performed at his memorial service. By turns ethereal, dramatic and ultimately transcendent, this is a masterpiece that deserves to be heard by modern audiences.

The concert continues with Nänie, Johannes Brahms’ gorgeous choral lamentation, art songs by Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughn Williams and two contemporary gems from Canadian composer Stephen Chatman set to poems by Christina Rossetti. Daniel Gawthrop’s ethereal Sing Me to Heaven reflects on the premise that there are times in our lives when nothing but music can express the intensity of what we are feeling. Regina Coeli, the famous Easter chorus from Mascagni’s opera Cavallieri Rusticana, concludes this memorable evening of classical music.
