After a pause of some years, the Cantata Singers will again perform cantatas! This concert of sumptuous baroque music will take place by candlelight on March 9th, at Christ Church Cathedral.

We are thrilled to have with us the exceptional Orchestra of the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal, 18 professional early musicians playing period instruments. Their opulent accompaniment will be fortified by three trumpets and by timpani. Our soloists are Anne-Marie Beaudette (soprano), Maude Brunet (mezzo-soprano), Michiel Schrey (tenor), and Clayton Kennedy (baritone).

The program includes two J.S. Bach cantatas, BWV126 “Gott is unser Zuversicht” (God is our confidence), and BWV197, “Erhalt uns Herr, bei deinen Wort” (Sustain us, Lord, with your word) as well as a favourite motet, “Jesu, Meine Freude “ (Jesus, my Joy). Based on a seventeenth-century German chorale, this motet is the longest and most musically complex of Bach’s 6 choral motets. It was composed for the funeral service of a much-loved member of his church congregation and is simultaneously solemn and inspiring. The cantatas will delight music lovers with divine and virtuosic arias and rousing trumpet-led choral fantasia.

Come and hear CSO sing the music that we most appreciate and love, under the exceptional direction of Andrew McAnerney.
