The “Great” Mass in c, K427, one of Mozart’s finest works, was composed in 1782-3 in the first year of his marriage to Constanze Weber, whose recovery from a serious illness he wanted to celebrate. It remained unfinished, missing parts of the Credo and the Agnus Dei, but as with the later Requiem, Mozart left sketches that later composers would complete. This is a much larger piece than Mozart’s earlier masses, long and calling for a full orchestra. It is in effect a “missa solemnis”.
