Conductor Suzanne Yeo will lead a run-through of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. 2024 is the 100th anniversary of the composer’s death and this work is one of the most beloved in sacred choral repertoire. Suzanne Yeo is a graduate of the University of Toronto with a M.Mus. in piano performance who has experience in orchestral conducting and in collaborative work in opera.
Fauré’s Requiem (op. 48) is an unusual example of the genre, in particular given his choice of text from the Requiem liturgy, which is quite different from the typical one, keeping only the Pie Jesu from the Dies Irae section and ending with In Paradisum. Fauré himself was to say of it that it reflected his own attitude towards death “as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience”, as well as his own religious faith.
Please join us in experiencing the music of this beautiful requiem!
