Hiring Music Director (Part-time – 24 to 32 hours/month)

The Music Director leads, develops, and enriches the congregation’s worship experience by providing appropriate musical and choral support at regular Sunday services as well as other special services and events. Grace United Church is an inclusive and affirming place of worship.

The Music Director will be hired by the Ministry & Personnel Committee and accountable to the Worship Committee.

Specific areas of accountability
The Music Director will:
1. Nurture the spiritual life of the congregation through music.
2. In collaboration with the minister and the organist/pianist, assist with the selection of music and hymns for Sunday and other services, with reference to liturgical seasons, lectionary readings and special services, and occasions throughout the year.
3. Provide leadership in music during services: direct the congregation and choir in the singing of hymns and anthems.
4. Lead rehearsal of the musicians/choir/youth in preparation for weekly worship services.
5. Facilitate, support, and regularly lead youth to participate in worship, instrumentally and/or vocally.
6. Plan and prepare special music for events through the year in collaboration with the minister and the organist/pianist.
7. Plan for a continuing ministry of music during summer in conjunction with the organist/pianist.
8. Encourage the inclusion of various genres of worship music including traditional, contemporary, choral, instrumental.
9. Recruit and train choristers.
10. Search out new music for the choir and other groups as required; oversee music collection.
11. Contribute to and monitor the annual music budget.

Skills and Qualifications

– A Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music is an asset
– Above average competence and understanding of fundamental music principles
– Knowledge of choral repertoire and familiarity with a variety of choral rehearsal techniques
– Skill in choral teaching, conducting and voice development for a choir where not everyone reads music
– Ability to play a musical instrument(s) and/or direct instrumentalists would be an added asset
– Openness to introducing a variety of worship musical styles, both vocal and instrumental as well as traditional and contemporary
– An appreciation of how music integrates and enhances Christian worship in a United Church of Canada setting
– Experience with worship planning

Leadership and Communication
– A clear concept of being an integral part of the Worship Team along with the minister, instrumentalist(s) and others
– Self-directed and time efficient
– Willingness to meet regularly with the minister regarding worship planning, and to meet monthly as a member of the Worship Team to determine the musical direction of worship services (Sunday or otherwise)
– Computer skills; e-mail, report writing, digital audio software (asset, but not essential)
– Team building skills
– Excellent communication skills with the ability to use tact, diplomacy and sensitivity
