Job description

Accompanist for Chorus Niagara Children’s Choir (CNCC), Concert Choir and Chamber Choir

Start Date: August 2020 – May 2020.
One Year contract renewed annually.
Supervised by: Chorus Niagara Children’s Choir Artistic Director

Purpose of Position: To provide piano accompaniment for the Concert Choir (ages 11 – 16) and Chamber Choir (auditioned group) for rehearsals and concerts, and other and other events as required for the CNCC, the Niagara region’s premier children’s community choral organization.

Accompany all CNCC rehearsals
Wednesday evening rehearsals in St. Catharines scheduled from 5:30 pm–7 pm (Concert Choir) and 7:10 pm–8:00 pm (Chamber Choir) from September to the end of May
One full day Saturday rehearsal (10 am – 2 pm)
One overnight choral retreat
Two seasonal concerts each year, with one dress rehearsal before each concert
Accompany and lead sectionals as needed
Accompany/play for additional concerts, festivals, tours, and events as outlined in the schedule

Skills needed:
Excellent musicianship and playing ability
Strong sight-reading and transposition skills
Knowledge of stylistic features, traditions and performance practice of music including classical, jazz, popular, world music an asset
Ability to take sectional rehearsals occasionally
Independent worker
Knowledge of choral repertoire for children
Comfort with and an ability to act as a member of a small instrumental ensemble
Ability to play from piano scores and the ability to reduce choral parts and play from the open score as needed for rehearsals
The ability to work with young singers from a wide variety of backgrounds and skills in a kind and nurturing way

Qualities and communication:
Pleasant interpersonal skills, commitment to professional courtesy, able to work cooperatively with others
Ability to share musical ideas in rehearsals in a way that promotes good singing and music-making
Needs to be organized and able to keep track of rehearsal schedules, repertoire and staff meetings (as needed)
Be in regular communication with the Artistic Director

Salary and fees:
Remuneration based on the number of engagements per season.

Education and qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in music minimum (Masters preferred)
We prefer a successful record of professional experience in collaborative accompaniment
