The West Ottawa Ladies Chorus is an auditioned community choir that was founded under the leadership of the present Director, with just 12 singers in 2012. Since then it has grown to a stable membership of around 40 singers, all of whom express the joy of music through their performances. The choir performs three of its own public concerts a year, two at Christmas and one in the Spring, but also performs as guests at other concerts and offers its music to retirement homes and community groups in the region.
The choir sings a wide variety of repertoire from classical choral music, to gospel, swing, sacred music and folk songs, all in three- and four-part harmony. It is known for its musical skills, sensitive interpretations and balanced sound. There is a family feeling within the choir that creates a positive atmosphere for both rehearsing and performing.
The job responsibilities will include conducting regular rehearsals, which at present occur twice a week on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons, repertoire selection, working with the accompanist and with the Choir executive, encouraging vocal skills, recruiting and auditioning new members, and generally encouraging excellence in vocal technique.
Skills: An in-depth knowledge of choral music in a variety of genres, strong leadership abilities, a demonstrated knowledge of vocal technique, ability to recruit and audition new members, able to coordinate with accompanist and executive, able to foster a positive atmosphere within the choir.
