About the Oakville Choir for Children and Youth
The Oakville Choir for Children and Youth is an internationally recognized multi-level community children’s choir program with seven ensembles.

For 30 years, the Oakville Choir has been providing exceptional music education, leadership development and performance opportunities to young people.

About the Role:
The Assistant Conductor for Brave & Noble Voices would work closely with the Main Conductor to assist with implementing and delivering the choral programme of vocal technique, performance skills and musicianship, including weekly rehearsals and leading sectionals.
Rehearsals would be weekly on Wednesday in Oakville as follows: 6 – 8:30 PM.
Contract Term: January – June 2023

Qualifications, Competencies and Skills

The ideal candidate will possess these qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Choral Conducting, Vocal Performance, Music Education or equivalent experience
  • Strong classroom management skills required.
  • At least three years of practical conducting experience with youth and/or children’s choirs
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take direction from the Brave/Noble Conductor and the Artistic Director, and to work collaboratively with the artistic team, the administrative and operations team, and volunteers
  • Demonstrated interest in musical education and children’s musical programming and/or choral production
  • Passion for working with children and strong belief in and understanding of the benefits of performance-based music education

Position Assets:

  • Experience working with boys & boys experiencing voice change
  • Established networks in the choral community
  • Experience planning and implementing choral performances
  • Experience working with transgender youth

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Primary Conductor in the following duties:
    • Implementing a choral programme of vocal technique, performance skills and musicianship
    • Deliver the choral programme, including weekly rehearsals, sectionals, and extra rehearsals that are essential to the success of the program
    • Provide leadership to the team supporting Brave & Noble (i.e., Collaborative Pianist(s), Choir Manager(s), Parent Volunteers)
  • Have basic proficiency in piano to facilitate rehearsals Cover the Brave & Noble Conductor for all rehearsals when necessary and be ready to cover performances (if necessary)
  • Assist with vocal placements for new choristers The Brave & Noble Conductor may identify opportunities for the Assistant Conductor to conduct the ensemble on selected works and programs during the season.
